Orkut Updates!

Well, we all know Orkut has undergone a "supposedly" phenomenal changeover with respect to their look. As part of the new feature-set, they have included the 'updates' section where one is notified of the updates made by anyone in the friend's list. As a result of the same, your page will invariably be cluttered with updates. Heck, I tried to disable this thing, but apparently its 'not possible' right now..

Is it really called for to make this damn thing mandatory?

Truly speaking, i just don't like it.. i mean why would i be interested in updates of profiles...and above that, the "Upcoming birthday" section is in the end now. Which i believe isn't that good, the required information in the end...

I mean, it's a pretty decent feature but then they are messing up the basic things. Important things first....Makeover is good, but i believe that they are over doing it now...

Also the rendering of the web page would not take a few seconds extra depending on the bandwidth...

wht say..??

I feel this feature is indeed important not form the revenue perspective but from feature a social networking site should provide.
It details you with a quick summary about the info of changes of the peers info, ranging from location, status, profession etc etc. I think that is why we all came to orkut to stay abreat and connected to our friends.
But yes having said that this feature should have been made optional as per the willingness of their (orkut's) customers. In the end the user might feel irate by it.

one of the things that I didn't like in facebook is now on orkut

definitely they should add the ability to enable/disable the feature.

@rohit
bandwidth is not a concern for folks like Google.. I agree with the rest of the things you said though..

@Gaurav
Well, Social Networking started as a concept, but I guess they are playing with it now. Keeping it optional would have been the way to go about it, and I was indeed surprised since their concept of 'profile visitors' work otherwise. I'm not sure why this deliberate inconsistency has been introduced.

@venu
Finally, I get to hear something from you. I r'ber you were the first one to invite me to facebook, and I didn't like it because of way too many plugins and services introduced. Keep it simple - needs to be the motto. I hope they provide enable/disable ability on this.

Dude.... Google won't really bother abt bandwidth...ur right, I agree with you.. bt then, i think that the home page of orkut should not be loaded with too many features. Poor indians, they'd probably find it an issue then.....

And now, the thingo.. well i tried to disable the update thing, and somehow it didn't give me any of those messages this time. Check it out again, i think google folks have read ur blog ;)... but still as of now the update section is being displayed. It does takes time for them to reflect the changes that you make, but don't know whether it will be done or not.. would update you on the same. But now atleast it's getting saved, once you change the setting from the "Privacy" tab under the setting section.

Keep blogging...

Thats interesting, though am still not sure if they actually disable the updates, since they have 'explicitly' mentioned as their feature of 'not' doing so.
I'll check again though.
